The design of the app is straightforward and user-friendly; in fact, it closely resembles WhatsApp's straightforward and functional aesthetic. But given that modern design tends to create a minimalistic and light experience, I'm not shocked that they 'appropriated' WhatsApp's look. There is only so much you can simplify before the app's appearance becomes monotonous. And with texting being such an interactive service, that is the last thing you would want to do. Only five buttons are visible on the interface: the buttons for audio and video calls, the camera, the emoji prompt, and the return button to the contact screen. It creates a truly clutter-free and quite enjoyable experience without all the bells and whistles.

Overall, I would give the design a good grade. Although it certainly didn't help that the two designs are so similar that it could be considered that they technically stole it, I'm not really upset about it because it's a lovely one that they've taken.

Other than that, IMO uses end-to-end (E2EE) encryption standards for all of its transmission, much like any other messaging app available. With WhatsApp being the one to popularise the technology, a plethora of other apps also utilize this clever little encryption mechanism to assure security. But I wouldn't exactly bet on it being completely secure; perhaps I'm just being pessimistic.

The thing about these apps is that, as long as you have Internet, you really don't need to pay for anything aside from a potential data charge, making them a whole league better than normal carrier calling and SMS. That applies if you have a 3G or LTE plan; otherwise, the service is totally "free." Since IMO is a for-profit messaging service, you are granted unlimited time to use both the video and audio calling capability and to send messages. There is no debate in this department. Most responses to this most fundamental and important function have been positive. The calls are clear, and the other side can clearly hear the messages.

Sharing of pictures and videos is also an option. In general, IMO handles it fairly effectively and quickly as it had been promised. However, the pace of upload and download actually relies on you and the other person's Internet speed.

IMO keep up with Facebook by offering you pages and pages of free emojis to pick from. Although the quality might not be as good as those provided by the other services, I think there is still enough for you to pick from.

Summary

Sincerely, IMO is 'just another' texting app. Despite having a fresh name, it hasn't yet contributed anything innovative to make it stand out from the competition and advance. It is currently as simple as an app in this class can be, and that might not be suitable for everyone. So it's okay if you decide not to utilize the app at this time. There are plenty of others available.
